Third and fourth generation builders formed

M W Layzell (Builders) Ltd.

Jeremiah Layzell started the family business in 1895; this was subsequently taken over by his son 'Wes'. The company carried out general building works and new developments.

Michael, the youngest of 'Wes's' sons joined the family firm upon leaving school and trained as a carpenter and joiner. In 1975 he started his own business, initially constructing quality homes of character and eventually working extensively on listed buildings and older properties. Michael finds it both challenging and rewarding to restore a home to its original beauty using traditional methods and materials.

Matthew (Michael's nephew) similarly joined the family business when he left school, undertaking his apprenticeship in bricklaying within his father's firm before becoming self employed. Matthew specialised in new buildings constructed in natural stone working extensively with hamstone, lias, flint and other local stones.

In order to provide a more comprehensive service to their customers and build upon their reputations for workmanship and service, the duo joined forces in 2002. Since then the business has continued to thrive and despite the current shortage of labour in the industry the company is proud to have secured the services of a conscientious and accomplished workforce.
